Murals don't need to be painted on site. Some have chosen to have their mural painted on canvas (and glued to the wall), OR painted on 1/8" hardboard (attached with nails, then framed with moulding).
June 2011--"High School Transportation Department" Project
I have been commissioned to paint a mural for the transportation department at a school district. The director wants it to be fun, lively, and whimsical. I came up with a drawing the very next day, and he really likes it. This is the drawing:
I am very excited to paint this mural...it is something I'm not accustomed to...bright, vibrant, and whimsical. I am painting this on 1/8" hardboard, which will be installed and framed, so that if need be it can be moved if required in the future. More pictures to come!
This is the finished product (minus the framework...I shall post that soon). This project took me about 45-50 hours to complete. It is rather detailed, but not overly so. I really like how it turned out. I outlined most of the elements in black because I thought it would give it more of a whimsical feel, which it did! The Director said it was exactly what he was looking for...something fun and goofy. Well, that's me. ha ha.

January 2011--"Beach Scene" Project
This mural was painted at my home on 1/8" hardboard, and taken to a residence and installed. The home owner wanted a mural she could take with her if she decided to move. It is a French Door scene, which was really made to look more realistic by the mouldings surrounding it.
The mural in progress.
The completed mural, moulded. It really opened up the very small space.
